Expand Your Computer Screen Real Estate on Your Desk

Friday, December 12th, 2008

A recent wall street journal article from Michael Totty discussed the research related to worker productivity and the size of their computer monitor. The bottom line of the article was that the larger the computer display the better. The reason behind this is the more screen real estate you have, the less time you spend searching for work across multiple open windows and scrolling through documents. With multiple screens you can separate different tasks to each screen.  Personally, I have two computers active on my desk and right now one computer is busy downloaded 400 emails this morning, while I am busy studying the analytics and writing this blog. No more waiting and getting coffee. I can work non stop oh yea!  We have multiple computer stations in our call center which also allows for better productivity among our customer service representatives.  Other call centers saw a 10% productivity gain after a three monitor system was installed.

A three monitor system will take up a ton of desk space. Therefore a major consideration are computer monitor arms to lift the displays off the work surface.  Comfortchannel.com is expanding our offerings in desk monitor arms in 2009. I personally bought a HDTV that acts as a computer monitor and a monitor arm makes all the difference.

What is the best fabric for an office chair?

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

I was looking through the latest sales offered by local stores to keep tabs on what is the current hot item and I saw that our ergonomic office chairs department does not have any microsuede fabric offerings. But is this really a good fabric for seating over high quality leather fabric found in our top of the line Bodybilt Executive office chairs or even the simple fabric of the Office Master task office chairs or line?  I would think that over time, hair and lint and crumbs would cover the microsuede material and you would need a lint brush to clean it.  But I would like to hear from anyone who has microsuede and tell me if the fabric works in the office. If it does, we will begin to carry this in our already huge selection of comfortable office chairs department.

Closet Office - Incubate and Organize your Start-Up at Home

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

When the economy sours and businesses have to cut jobs and other expenses to survive the downturn, the seeds of the recovery are sown with the people who challenge themselves and start new businesses in their homes and garages.  All new businesses must start somewhere and it is always smart to invest money in technology and talent instead of fancy office space.  For those that do not have a room to dedicate to the home office, an idea could be to carve out a workspace at home in the living rooom closet. All that is needed is removing the closet rod, add a work surface 30 inches off the floor cleated to the wall and inexpensive bracket shelving for desk accessories, such as wooden letter trays. A LCD monitor arm can lift the LCD screen off the desk top for even more work space.  Other file organizers can set on the shelving or below the desk to keep the new start-up ideas flowing and jobs creation right around the corner.

How to Travel Light while on a Business Trip

Friday, March 21st, 2008

Chief executives and anyone traveling on business can sometimes find themsleves shuttling from cars, airplanes, and other types of transportation.  When meeting with people and business partners, it is common to accumulate a bulky collection of business cards, receipts, and other scraps of papers.  A clutter management strategy centers around small leather laptop bags, that works as a briefcase, but can hold gadgets like blackberries, and cellphones.

A business executive can get away with a standard double fold wallet with a slim design to work in suit pockets.  Limiting the wallet to six cards and only essential information such as car service numbers.  Receipts and business cards should be kept in coat ockets and not into the wallet.  Back at the office, they can be entered in the contact system or filed away. It is generally better to pay a little more for high quality leather. Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.

For road warriers, one of the best ways to stay organized is the car desk.  The designs available offer mobile office desks for paperwork filing, to auto desks that are powered for laptops.
