Home and Room Air Humidifiers and Vaporizers
Maintaining the humidity of the air in your home, particularly in the dry winter months, can provide many benefits. Proper moisture in your home's air helps to prevent dry scratchy throats, itchy skin, and sinus problems. Humidity also helps maintain the wood in your home and furnishings, as dry air will draw the moisture from any source. For those in the technical fields, or use computers at home, proper humidity can prevent dangerous static electricity build-ups. If you have children or elderly in your home, you may wish to look into the special NiteGlo humidifiers which offer a comforting soft glow of light.
In order to get the most out of your humidifier, it is necessary to follow some important guidelines. The basic rule of thumb is to keep the humidity in your home somewhere between 30-50%.
Hot air absorbs much more moisture than cold air. Because of this, when the heat is raised in our homes, humidity drops to a very low percentage. As the air heats up, it begins stealing moisture out of your plants, walls, furniture, books, paintings, human bodies...virtually everything. By maintaining humidity above 30%, you can lower the heat by a few degrees. The air will naturally feel warmer - thus creating a safer, more efficient environment.
Allergy inducing dust mites thrive in moist air. When humidity climbs above 50%, dust mites begin rapidly multiplying. This can cause severe allergic reactions. When the humidity reaches 75% fungi and mold become prevalent. Fungi and molds are known to cause asthma attacks and rhinitis (inflammation of mucous membranes of the nose).
Humidifier Maintenance
Change the water every day. Clean water in your humidifier will ensure cleaner air for your lungs. Empty the tank, dry the inside surfaces and refill with clean water.
Clean your humidifier regularly. Unplug your humidifier before cleaning it. If you decide to use chlorine bleach or disinfectant be sure to rinse out the tank thoroughly before filling it with water. (You don't want to be breathing in harmful chemicals.) Remember to clean thesponge filters and belts.
Use distilled or demineralized water. Tap water generally contains minerals which can create bacteria-friendly deposits in your humidifier. If this happens, the humidifier will disperse this unwanted contaminent into the air you are breathing, and often appear as white dust on your furniture.
Make sure your humidifier is dry and spotlessly clean before you storing it. Clean it again when you are set to use it again. Be sure to remove any dust from the exterior.
