Ping Pong Rackets can range from just a few dollars to several hundred dollars. For the recreational player, the expense and quality of the racket isn’t as important as it might be for a competitive player. In general, a racket that comes fully assembled, (i.e. blade, rubber, and sponge are included in the purchase of the racket). These rackets typically cost between $5 to $25 and are great for the recreational player.
The competitive player will approach buying a racket in terms of their playing style, and in terms of the level of competition. The blade, rubber, sponge, and glue are purchased separately, and assembled to the exact specifications of the competitor.
Killerspin offers a complete line of professional components to create your own custom ping pong paddle. A table tennis racket is made up of two parts. The wooden or composite blade is the "handle and paddle". The rubber is the foam and rubber sheet that creates the playing surface. Both the rubber and blade are available in many different configurations to suit all styles of play. The rubber is glued to the blade, a red sheet on one side and a black sheet on the other is required by ITTF regulations. Many players use different rubbers on each side to give them a more versatile racket. The pre-assembled Killerspin paddles are priced for all skill levels, and offer the same high quality with out the extra work.
In the 1880’s, table tennis utilized a heavy ball, and the paddle was a smaller version of the tennis racket. The introduction of the celluloid ball in 1900 changed the previously strung racket to the wooden design now in common use. This was the only major change to the core of the paddle, the rules now state that at least 85% of the blade must be made of wood. Recreational ping pongers usually call it a Paddle. In the U.K. they describe it as the Bat. Pro players prefer the term Racquet, but during competition, you may often hear announcers call it the weapon.
