Choosing the Right Stroller for your Baby
Strollers are a convenient and safe way to go places with your baby. There are single strollers, which carry one baby, or double and triple strollers for twins and siblings.
Styles of Strollers :
Convenience Strollers verses Jogging Strollers
Convenience Strollers are lightweight and are seldom more than 15 pounds. They fold easily and are compact once folded. They are ideal for travel and outdoor excursions. Many have aluminum frames, are lightweight, durable and easy to travel with. Some Convenience Strollers offer full reclining seats. Others recline somewhat. These are not for use with newborn babies. Convenience Strollers are not as comfortable as Jogging Strollers. Convenience Strollers are useful for quick errands. Jogging Strollers are designed for longer errands, exercise and walks across town. Jogging Strollers frequently have steel frames, larger, bicycle-style wheels and because of their larger frames, offer more storage space but don't fold down as compact (or not at all).
Comparing Single and Double Strollers
Single Strollers often weigh around about 15 pounds. Larger Single Strollers are luxurious and typically have plush fabric, plenty of foam padding, and the seats can recline with up to four positions. Single strollers often have a large retractable canopy to protect your child from the elements and sometimes have a zip-out weather shield or bug screen.
Double Strollers are designed for two children. Double Strollers are a convenient way to transport two babies. There are two different types, the "tandem" and the "side-by-side." Double Strollers allow children to play and talk with each other. Double Strollers are lightweight, fold easily and compactly.
Vehicle Seat Cross-overs
Some Strollers have a combination stroller/car seat. This cross-over means that an infant car seat that can be attached to the stroller and vise-versa. Parents can then move their baby from a car to a stroller simply, without taking them out of the car infant-seat. Some Strollers allow the baby to face forward and some to face the Parent. Cross-overs are compact and often fold down for storage.
Stroller Features
Frames
Stroller frames are constructed with plastic, steel or aluminum. Plastic and aluminum frames are lightweight but not as sturdy as steel.
Harness
Strollers must always have either a three-point or a five-point harness to keep infants safely buckled in. Five point harnesses with chest clips are superior and they are the safest harness.
Canopy and Weather shield
Many Baby Strollers have a canopy to protect your child from the sun and rain and offer a modicum of privacy. Some canopies are adjustable and can fully retract. Some have a see-through bug screen or plastic window.
Storage
Under seat storage baskets and/or mesh pockets on the back of the seat can hold extra clothing, food and/or the essential diaper bag.
Front Belly Bar or Tray
Belly bars give the child a place to grab onto. Some have a snack tray or play table. Belly bars can be padded, removable and adjustable.
Recline
Baby Strollers that have a reclining seat is appropriate for newborns who cannot support their heads by themselves and need to be in a lying position. Recline positions are necessary for your growing baby to take naps. Fully upright position can be used once your baby is able to support his head.
Infant Headrests
Help support a baby's head and neck while in the newborn stage.
Accessory Bars
Stroller's handles are a convenient place to attach a storage tray and cup holder.
Toy and Activity Bars
Keep your baby entertained and occupied while out and about.
Newborn infants versus growing babies
Strollers with a fully reclining seat and a head support are ideal for an newborn infant. Strollers featuring without the head support are designed for older babies.
